Renewable Wind Power

pio1225123049As an electric customer of Georgetown Utility Systems you now have the ability to purchase some of the most environmentally friendly power on earth – renewable Wind Power.

Georgetown Utility Systems (GUS) is now offering the opportunity to support electricity generated by a sustainable, renewable power source that uses no fossil fuels, produces no emissions and leaves no by-products. A kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity generated by wind is a kWh not generated with fossil fuel and that means improved air quality.

WindPower is more expensive than the bulk of our energy, but it provides Georgetown residential and small business consumers an opportunity to help bring environmentally-friendly power to Georgetown and continue to keep our overall rates as low as possible.

How it works

Power out of thin air – it’s no magic trick. Properly placed wind turbines can generate electric power anywhere the wind blows steady and strong. Wind turbines use the momentum of moving air to quietly turn the large blades, which are attached to the shaft of an efficient electric generator.

Why does WindPower cost more?

Because while renewable resources like sunlight may be free, the technology used to capture the energy these resources produce is still more expensive than traditional power generation methods. By choosing to pay a little more for WindPower Switch, you help advance the technology and increase the amount of electricity generated from cleaner sources.

Did You Know?

Buying two blocks of green power per month for a year equals:

  • recycling 480 pounds of aluminum (that’s 15,322 cans), or
  • recycling 1,766 lbs. of newspaper!

How to plug in

Making the WindPower Switch is as easy as flipping a light switch.

You can buy WindPower in 100-kilowatt-hour blocks (about 12 percent of a typical household’s monthly use) at a rate of 1.5 cents per kWh in addition to your current base rate*. Each block you sign up to purchase will add $1.50 to your monthly power bill, and you can buy just one block or up to five blocks. The WindPower you pay for will be added to GUS’s electric system as part of the utilities total power mix.
